Who uses Open Source Software?

by Jason Drohn

An interesting thought..

If you were to ask a room full of people who uses open source software, about 2-10% of the people would raise their hands, depending on who the crowd was.

If you were to ask the same room of people who uses Google or Ebay, every single one of them would raise their hands and maybe even start clapping!

Given that those two applications are made of open source software, what does that tell you?

My guess is most people aren’t aware of what open source is. If they knew that alot of these companies are, or at one point were, then that would help them understand open source.

Its kind of one of those words that people understand the concept, but don’t know the word means the concept.

You are definitely right Kyle, It triggers a change in thought and a form of education behind the concept. It really shows you where a lot of technology is going though!

I was explaining few days ago to some people what open source is…and i gave up.
They had no idea what it was or what was i talking about.
So i told them short:
Someone makes a software, let you see the code ,and you can copy, change it,distribute it as you please.
All i got was :Ohhh!

LOL. I know! It is definitely a change in the way someone thinks about software, but it is revolutionary to think that some of the world’s biggest applications are just that, open source!
