Business Building 101 – Pay Per Click Advertising

by Jason Drohn

ppc advertising professionalA lot of times, we talk about Adsense and YPN to produce revenue on our sites.  What I want to cover with this article is the exact opposite, advertising your site through a Pay Per Click campaign.

When you release a website or want to promote a product, you have your traditional sources of online adverstising; banners, press releases, news briefings, and pay per click campaigns to name a few.  For those unfamiliar to pay per click (PPC) programs like Adwords, it is an advertising model where you only pay for the ad when someone clicks on it through a website or a search engine.  What you pay is determined by what keywords you are using and what your competition is, but it doesn’t usually go above 50 or 75 cents.  The key is optimizing your PPC ads to bring the greatest impact.

I have come up with a 8 step guide to letting you get the most of your PPC advertising campaign.  A lot of people don’t do half of these things, and they end up spending more than they are earning through the ads.  If you do it correctly though, it is amazing to see what can be achieved.

PPC Advertising Guide:

  1. Create a landing page for EACH of your products that you intend to advertise.  It is imperative to do this.  Don’t just send them to your homepage, because the potential customer will get confused and click out.
  2. Tweak the wording to see what works and what doesnt.
  3. Always use a call to action like buy now, learn more, etc.
  4. Make sure they are performing or the ad network (Google) will freeze the ad because of low click throughs.
  5. If you say free, be prepared to spend a lot of money on click throughs.  Get the most out of it.
  6. Don’t use trademarks of other companies
  7. Take advantage of PPC programs that let you weed out where your ads will be published.
  8. When bidding, don’t be the highest bidder, but bid higher than the average bidder.  The top three places usually receive a lot of ‘test’ clicks.

As I mentioned before, this is an excellent way to bring in new traffic and potential customers.  The way I look at it, the landing page is the most important thing ever.  When a customer is sent to your site from a search, Google has done their job and they expect to be paid.  Now it is up to you to convert that click into revenue on your site.

If anyone needs any help in setting up a PPC campaign, let me know.  When pay per click first came out, I tested and tried the model, and made some mistakes for sure.  I would hate to see you do the same thing!  Just send me an email and we can get your landing pages tweaked and your keywords selected.
