SEO Tutorial – How To Optimize Keywords

– Update: My domaining book/eBook has been released. Check out “The Art of Domaining: A Comprehensive Guide for Domainers” today! –

As a thank you for making yesterday my most successful blogging day thus far, both with traffic and revenue (I seriously had to leave my computer because I couldn’t believe the money the site was making!), I am reaching into my bag of tricks to show you how much I appreciate it.

keyword selector toolI want to take a second and introduce you to the most useful tool you will EVER come across. Well, next to your web browser that is. Seriously, it challenges your email software.. If you know how to use it right at least.

This article will not only give you the site for the application, but show you how to use it!

That tool is the keyword selector tool from Overture.

So what can it be used for?

Everything. Domaining. Blogging. SEO. PPC Ads.

What it does is tell you how many times a user searches a word or topic in the last month. For instance, if you write about travel, and want both great search results and high value PPC ads, type hotels into this the suggestion field. It will output a list of the top 100 searched terms for “hotels” last month.

Then write about it!

Use one of the top variations in your article title. Use the same phrase a couple times through the post itself. Tag it with the same wording. If you write about it a lot, establish a category for it. Pick a couple of the top search results and run them as themes through your site.

keyword selector toolThink about how many times the word “hotel” is used across the internet as a keyword. There isn’t a chance you will rank well. But if you use a variation like “Las Vegas Hotel,” your chance of being brought up by Google or Yahoo is better.

I am not suggesting rewording all of the keywords in your header. Frankly, Google doesn’t care. Yahoo looks at them a little, but that’s it. What you do want to do is establish trust. Make sure that you have a running theme across your site. You could talk about Las Vegas Hotels in one post, maybe Chicago Hotels in the next, really drill down what you are writing about.

This tool will ultimately tell you what people are searching. It is up to you to find the niche you want to write about.

So who wants to know how to use this tool to optimize for the highest paid keywords? Seriously, leave me a comment and I will write a tutorial about it :0) It requires a few other pieces of information, but this is the foundation..

That’s right, but the tool is quite old and not updated. Many people believe that it’s left out by Yahoo for ever.

Google’s external tool seems to be a good one for the moment.

  3. Thanks for your post.

Yea, pretty sure this tool is gone for good. Too bad. Well, there are plenty of replacements, at least. Stuff like google's tool as mentioned by abs workouts above, then there's wordtracker, keyworddiscovery, and lets not forget seobook's keyword tool as well. More than enough to make up for overture's tool being gone. :)
