Should I Become An Entrepreneur?

by Jason Drohn

Just when should someone consider becoming an entrepreneur?  Right after school when they don’t have (too many) bills?  After they have been in an industry for a little while?  Honestly, there is no right answer.  You have to believe in yourself, and find people who believe in you.

Remember my comment a couple weeks ago, “You need to surround yourself by people smarter than you.”  It applies here..

At pardonthisdisruption.com, Chip Griffin has posted a great article.  Basically, he outlines a couple broad points.  He says:

  • Are you in a position to work brutally long hours, devote tremendous enthusiasm, and risk virtually everything you have?
  • Do you and your partners have a great idea that solves a real problem?
  • Do you understand the problem you’re solving and how you’re solving it?
  • Is the problem one you have experienced yourself so you can develop and sell from the heart?
  • Do you have more than one partner willing to go in with you?  (Basically to tell you that you are crazy!)

The reason I say surround yourself by people smarter than you is this:  You may be fantastic at a few specific skill sets.  In fact you probably are if you are considering entrepreneurial work.  But you aren’t good at everything.  Find other people that round you out.  If you are a big thinker, find detail oriented individuals.  If you are a geek (and I am using the term in admiration because I pride myself as being one), find the social butterfly that can communicate your business ideas.

Take a systematic approach to developing business ideas and pride yourself as being an innovator.  Everything else will follow.
