“A Website Is Not A Business”

Posted by: Jason Drohn In: business building 101

On normal Sundays, when I am not traveling the countryside, I reiterate my favorite quotes from the past week.  Most of the time, they are ones that I read somewhere and wrote down.

This, however, was a comment made to me from a group of board members I presented to.  “A website is not a business.”

I’m sorry, but I could not disagree more.  If that were the case, Google and Amazon would be considered toys or projects of the thousands of people that show up to ‘work’ everyday.  They wouldn’t be considered pioneers in their respective industries, they would be just another place to go on the internet.

If a website were not a business, why am I going to have to pay taxes on the revenue from JDsBlog?  (And I am more than appreciative of that, don’t get me wrong.  Just proving a point.)

I got a bit upset at the above comment because it showed me the true lack of insight that a lot of people have.  I am interested.  How many of you think of your website or blog as a business?  Or for you freelancers, how many of you acquire a fair amount of leads through your site?

Who ever thinks like that is from the old-age. ;)

My first reaction: some websites are not businesses (hobby sites), some websites are businesses (Amazon) and some websites are parts of a business.

Upon reflection, though, seems that every website should be business-like in having an objective, a plan, and a budget.

Yes … so true.

People who know me think that I’m doing something illegal working from home, and when I say them that I have a website and make money they think something like : “Ohhh Yeahh”.

But now I have some strong arguments that I wasn’t aware until reading this post.I pay for hosting, taxes, and other expenses …so I have a BUSINESS.

Thanks

Hey Michael. You absolutely do! One of the things I hate the most is trying to explain to people how I sustain a living online.

How do you make money? Can I do it? I don’t understand. Do you pay taxes. It’s all good stuff in the beginning, but it gets old after a while :0) It’s a hell of a problem to have, isn’t it!

I’ve decided to let them wonder, and continue my journey , and be a internet billionaire as soon as possible. :)

A website is a virtual “store”. Therfore it is a business. End of story.
