How important is location when you are attempting to start a tech business? Well, one thing is clear… The internet is starting to bring down a lot of the location issues. Through Internet based tools, communication can now happen anywhere.
Right now, I am in Erie, Pennsylvania – not notable for their technology innovation. But some good things are starting to happen in my area. That was actually one of the reasons I called Rob Sandie, president of Viddler.com. He is located in the lower part of Pennsylvania, but we will be working together on some stuff. Look for a feature review on his company and a interview with him in the coming posts.
Back on topic.. Wired Magazine listed the top 10 tech towns. Here’s what they came up with:
- Seattle
- San Francisco Bay Area
- Los Angeles
- Austin
- Orlando
- Raleigh-Durham
- Pittsburgh
- New York City
- Boston
- Washington DC
I am a bit surprised that Pittsburgh is on the list, but they do have the nations top ranked computer science school. I have also been doing a lot of cutting edge work with people in Boston, so I am happy to see them up there.
I am still wondering though, how do you feel about location in a tech startup? Is it crucial or just happenstance?
