This is has long been a battle waiting to happen. A $1 Billion dollar lawsuit pointed squarely at the Google acquisition.
What I don’t understand is why YouTube hasn’t done anything about it before now. It was said that they have been dragging their feet when it came to protecting copyrights, but this is absurd. Viacom has every right to break into the Google piggybank and take their share.
Unfortunately, this is the crux of user generated content… Let everyone bring something to the party, and they will! Lawful or not. Whether it is if they break some copyright (which they don’t know anything about) or steal some idea, people do what serves them best.
Especially, when they are teenagers or young adults who don’t know any better.
I hope that this is a case of Google having the foresight to see this litigation. It would be ashame to see a good, forward looking company have such a major pitfall to overcome. On the other hand, if they saw this lawsuit pending and have prepared for it accordingly, it will be interesting to see what happens.
Google’s future deals heavily in video. If they have a sticking point in the lawsuit, now is the time to pull it out! I can’t imagine that Google paid $1.6 billion just to expense it out in under a year…
