My Entrepreneurial Anniversary

by Jason Drohn

This morning during my workout, it dawned on me that I have been effectively self employed for one year. Come to think of it, the times when I had to wake up at 5:30 to go to work seem so long ago.

I will be the first to say I don’t miss the weekly manager’s meetings or line graphs. The free coffee and bagels was nice though… Bosses who are cramming orders down your throat simply because they are told to do so. That life isn’t for me.

Instead, I lead a life where everyday is different. New people, new writing, new business opportunities. I consider myself very lucky for getting into blogging when I did, and for taking advantage of an education and spinning it out to be of entrepreneurial benefit.

Being self employed is a lot of times not all it’s cracked up to be. I talk a lot on how it is extremely rewarding and how it is a lifestyle that needs to be considered, but it is not for everyone.

Being a young entrepreneur requires a lot of work. Not only do you have to make connections that a lot of people in their 30′s and 40′s already have, but you are not blessed with fantastic credit scores or industry knowledge. That stuff takes time.

There is a lot of stuff that happens that you don’t see on my end as well. Consulting or developing for 18 to 20 hours a day for most of last year, just so I could make my car payment. Trying to perfect a writing style (which I am still working on) so that I can be a successful blogger. I admit, blogging is more a passion than a profession, but things are slowly starting to point the other way.

Do I miss not having weekly paychecks? Absolutely. There are times I haven’t been sure how I am going to pay my rent. My car payment has been a little late some months. I knew what I was getting into before I started though.

In fact, I think my mom still doesn’t know how I make money. She knows I own my own business, but she associates that with going to work. In effect, making a job place-related. My work is through a computer. Take away my computer and I lose a good amount of income potential.

In closing, I want to thank you for your time spent here and also for giving me a place to rant. I hope that I add some value to your day and maybe even shed some light on topics that are otherwise pretty transparent.

Look for more great articles to come though. We are only just getting started :0)
