I was reading an article on IBTimes, titled “Smaller Isn’t Always Better.” It details FlipStart, and the increase of mobile computing. The keys are small. The screens are hard to read. In the end, it basically leads to a pretty awful experience.
In my opinion, there is no doubt that professionals and computer users want to be mobile. But at what cost? Productivity? Good grammar? (because when you type on keys that are 1/5 of an inch wide, you are bound to screw up…)
So when I read that the entire professional workforce will be utilizing mobile devices in five years, I tend to be a little hesitant. Mobile devices have their merit; fast email responses, a in-sync calendar, typed notes, etc. But I simply don’t see myself conducting hardcore business from a cell phone.
If anything, mobile devices are great aids in productivity. They keep track of so much that I would forget on a daily basis. But I will in no way substitute a mobile PC for a real PC.
Maybe it is because I thrive on the ‘richness’ of the Internet. The always on, connectivity. Or maybe it is just because I have learned to manipulate my desktop environment in a way that suits me best.
Regardless, I think the time of being mobile is coming, but I think it will be a lot more transparent than what many people expect.
