Why is it that a good story adds to the aura of a good business?
Fast Company writes about two researchers from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley who just finished a paper discrediting the garage myth. The garage myth being that a founder of a mega company gets his or her start by utilizing their talent and insight alone. Hence, starting in their garage or dorm room.
MySpace, Youtube, Facebook, Google, Dell, Microsoft… All of these startups have an accompanying ‘rags to riches’ story behind them.
The article argues that the entrepreneur is more of a organizational leader, and knows just where to go to get the resources they need. This, in a way, debunks the garage startup because it isn’t just one incredible person, but a group of incredible people working together (usually in seperate areas).
What are your thoughts on startup stories? Are they a product of our “David and Goliath” expectations? Do they help spawn new businesses? Or are they just a fun way to tell a story?
