Twenga – Shopping Search Engine

With more startups in every niche, and the lower cost of entry, there are more competitors in every market. A site really needs to add value that a user can’t find anywhere else in order to be successful. This is as true in the ‘shopping search engine category’ as it is anywhere else.

Twenga, a UK shopping search engine, really does few things rather well. The part that I like the best though, is that you instantly know what the site is about. In the header and sidebar, there are links to the most popular categories; things like photo, audio-video, computers, and video games. The main content section has pictures and models, which is a nice feature. You can immediately start drilling down the options from the home page.

If you are shopping for computers, you just click the category link and get shuttled to a page to further define your search results. From here, the price comparisons start flowing. If you like a price, click it and the browser opens a new tab where the item is displayed at the retailer’s site.

The one downside to the search is that the product lineup isn’t full yet. I have been looking to build a new computer for a couple weeks now, so I have a good idea of what I want. I tried finding it on Twenga but couldn’t (keep in mind it isn’t out of beta yet). It might be that the search is tied to a geographic location as well; being France, UK, Spain and Italy, but I am not sure. If that is the case, it would be nice to see that distinction in the home page.

All in all, I think this is a site to keep an eye on. It has some very good points which any newbie web entrepreneur can take away from it. And if you are looking to make a purchase, run it through Twenga to see what you come up with.
