Still Around The Corner

Posted by: Jason Drohn In: entrepreneur tip

One of my favorite quotes of all time is written by JRR Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings.  You might be wondering, “What does this mean for business or startups?”  Well, read on…

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run

- JRR Tolkien

The moral is this:  every decision you make, leads you in a different direction.  If you are planning on starting a business that offers free geonavigational plotting on all handheld computing devices, it is going to make a difference what software you use to build it, what your features are, and so on.

In the same breath, if you tweak that idea every so slightly to include special tools for law enforcement or emergency personnel, the end product will be different.  You might perhaps offer those services as something additional or spin off a whole new product because of it.

I know it is common sense, but think of it this way.  The more you broaden your own horizons, the more you will be able to completely understand the world around you and develop your products and services with that increased knowledge.

Hell, I just signed up to be a volunteer firefighter which is way out in left field for me.  Challenge yourself to something new, and you might be surprised at what new roads you come across…

Thanks Kyle! I love it. What were some of the other authors you enjoy? I am looking for some new fantasy book to get into. I am pretty well through all of Tolkien, Salvatore, and Terry Brooks. I know you had some more suggestions..

So far, firefighting is cool. Still going through classes, but free education is good :0)

Jason,

Of the people that read the books you mentioned above (myself included) amongst the various message boards, here are the 3 series leading the epic fantasy genre:

Steven Erickson - Malazon Book of the Fallen

This series is 10 books in total. I think he’s published book 8 so far, but book 5 just came out in the US. It should be an international releasse by book 10. This is my favorite series, although it takes awhile to get into on Book 1. After that, its smooth sailing. This is my favorite series of the 3. This series has a heavy focus on gods messing with the lives of mortals.

R. Scott Bakker - Prince of Nothing

3 book series (series is complete) is amazing and has a lot of religious undertones. Because its complete, it has a small advantage over the other 3.

George RR Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire

This could be the best of the 3 book series (currently 4 of the 7 books are released, with book 5 almost finished). This one is probably closest to the books above, but there are several groups of people, all with various strengths and faults, making you like most of the characters. The great thing is ANY character in this series is fair game, making none invincible like in the other books you have read.

I would recommend starting with Song of Ice and Fire book 1, which is A Game of Thrones.
