Boo!

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

One of the things I want to get into heavy next year is 3D animation. I love 3D shorts and Pixar films; and I think we are going to be seeing more and more animation being used in everything from web advertising to content generation. One day, we will be able to take a college course and actually interact with the presentation as you would with a professor in a school. But only time will tell.

For those of you that partake in the Halloween tradition, Happy Halloween! And for those of you that don’t, enjoy the creativity in the video below!

A RoadBlock Or An Excuse?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

One of the things that drives me bat-shit crazy is excuses. I am not talking about small roadblocks that can be overcome, but pure ignorance that ends up adding hours to my workday and a few more gray hairs to my head.

This morning, I was sitting in my office and the owner of a company I am consulting with walks in. We are trying to implement this new software that basically drives personalized traffic to a website, through a printed brochure or postcard (It really is a whole lot more complicated than that..). He keeps telling me he doesn’t understand and he needs sales material so he can go out and sell it. So I did the powerpoint presentations and some real pretty graphs and explained it all to him. But he is still pissed at the world because he hasn’t made any money from his investment yet!

The bottom line is he needs to sit down for 2 minutes and UNDERSTAND what this software does. It isn’t about stringing a line of BS long enough that a customer writes a check. It’s about learning and adapting and growing. The thing is, for him, it’s easier to blame everyone else and make excuses than it is to take a minute and learn something new.

My challenge to all of us for the day (including myself) is to stop readily handing out excuses. Instead, why don’t we try to solve the problems before someone asks, and then follow through with those solutions to get the job done…

The Entrepreneur’s Educational Budget

Monday, October 29th, 2007

The thing about a great success in life is oftentimes not the actual destination, but the journey.  Take college for instance.  Getting that degree is what you invest four years worth of time for.  But the true worth of your time is actually the journey you make in order to receive that leather bound piece of paper!

In talking to entrepreneurs from every continent, and every walk of life, over the past two years, I have recognized one very common string – the need for continuing education.  These people make it their business to be as informed as possible, in as many ways as you can imagine.  Now, this might only be reading one book a month, or attending a seminar once a quarter, but they are always learning!

Oftentimes, entrepreneurs will jump from one subject matter to another so that they might get a better world view.  For example, I once talked to a founder of a very successful, niche software company who was learning about real estate.  When I asked him, “Why?,” he just replied, “Because I it helps me broaden my view.”  A little bit later, he bought up a 14 room office building that he used as a startup incubator!  Talk about empowering ideas!

So many of the great entrepreneurs of our time actually set aside a budget for their education.  That might include money for the plane trip to a conference, meals and fees; or it might be more of the college oriented variety.  Either way, by a person making an investment in themselves, they are further solidifying their future.

7 Habits Winners!

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to get these on video today, but I did draw the winners of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People!

Before we get to the announcing though, I wanted to say a couple words about what I have been up to, and what I have in store for you. So this is going to be a braindump of sorts.

The first thing I have is the word, “actionable.” If it isn’t a word in the dictionary, it should be. I have been using it enough lately to account for at least half of my vocabulary. Why? Because it’s fun! No actually, to me, it means those people the you market to who actually do what you intend. For instance, the actionable market for PPC campaigns is approximately three times that of direct mail…

Secondly, if you don’t buy your business apparel from Queensboro, you are wasting money. I just ordered a fleece, a golf jacket, a button down, and a women’s fleece for Chelsey for $84.00 with shipping. Each piece has the TS logo on it. Can’t get much better than that.

And thirdly, I am almost 3/4 of the way through a ‘Goals vs. To Do Lists’ series.  This is going to include downloadable material for you, audio for your mp3 player, and articles for you to read.  I am pretty excited about it because I am very goal oriented, and I think it is the reason I can pull so much shit off effectively.  But I have one grey area – practically defining goals and tasks.  They are very different, but tell me if you don’t have the same problem!  We all live day by day.  And sometimes it’s hard to set goals when you are surrounded by daily projects!

So finally, we get to the 7 Habits winners.  If these people would be so kind and email me with their address, I will get the book shipped out ASAP (or as quick as the gnomes over at Amazon can work their magic…)

Winners:

Nick
Mike
Courtney

Next month, I will be holding another book give-a-way.  If you have any thoughts as to what the book should be, please let me know!  Just leave a comment below…  I am thinking ‘Never Eat Alone’ but if you guys/gals are up for something different, let’s hear you!

Book Give-A-Way – The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective PeopleHere at JDsBlog, we like to make you think. And we like to make you read! But sometimes, it does wonders to sit down with a book written by an author much more effective than I…

I know I am a little late to the game, but I just finished Stephen Covey’s fantastic book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” And truthfully, I had to refrain from writing about it because I had every intention of doing a drawing anyway. But let me just say this – if you haven’t read it, you should. If you read it two years ago, you should read it again. And if you just finished it… Well, it wouldn’t hurt to go back through it.

Basically, what the author does is outline the habits that truly effective people live by. This ranges from understanding the situations of the people around you, to leverage others for a more effective workflow. Then, to cap it off, he shows you how to “Sharpen the Saw,” which helps you keep your mind fresh and unobstructed.

It truly is a brilliant book, and one I highly recommend. In fact, what I am going to do is send The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleto three people who leave a comment below. It will be delivered from Amazon, brand spanking new and ready for your highlighter! The drawing itself will take place next Wednesday, so that gives you almost five days to sign up!

If you remember, we did the same thing with the 4 Hour Work Week!  And we plan on doing it every month!  So subscribe to the feed and be the first to know!
