Yeah, I know Jack Welch..

Posted by: Jason Drohn In: quirky

So today, a marketing strategist named Dan and myself, both consultants working together for the same company, were going through picking out domain names for a couple new initiatives. As you and I both know, I have the domaining bug something fierce, so I knew there wasn’t going to be anything good available. In the meantime, I have the strategist saying, “Look up FPO.com and ASAP.com.” I knew they were taken, but I did it anyway..

To make a long story short, we found some great domain names by using the tools at PCnames.com. We needed to target in on a specific industry. Let me get to the good part now.

In the process, Dan and I start talking about domain names in general, the internet, and the online state of affairs. Well, as it turns out, he was the one responsible for launching GE.com, the company site for General Electric in 1990. Apparently, GE.com was already bought up, and General Electric paid some huge sum of money for it to go along with their brand.

So me, being a smartass, asked Dan if he knew Jack Welch, Jeffrey Immelt, and all the rest of the people you hear about in the Wall Street Journal. Nonchalantly, he replied, “Of course!” Apparently, Immelt was two offices down from him, and Jack Welch used to take part in all sorts of different strategy discussions for the company! In fact, all of them are still on a first name basis!

Let me tell you… The rest of the morning has been nothing but a question and answer session. I think I learned more about the way we do business here in America than in four years of college. You see, Dan does most of his consulting work over in Russia, Berlin, Japan, and elsewhere. And the stories he has to share… I think I am going to have to start taking notes!

Jason,

Funny thing. I know it wasn’t part of your post necessarily, but I checked out PCNames.com and found a domain name I had been looking for for several days now. :D

I’ve been spending 30 minutes a day on GoDaddy searching and couldn’t find one I liked. One click and found one I’m happy with. Thanks!!
