I am taking a very comprehensive systems design course, and my professor’s favorite quote is, “Big systems that work come from small systems that work.”
It’s completely true. When you build a site or a software application, you have to approach it the same way you did when you were playing with your legos when you were a kid. You start with some small pieces, figure out how they are going to work together, and then keep building. Before you know it, you have this huge dinosaur or light saber that you are chasing after the dog with!
As I was thinking about John Byrtus’ quote, it struck me that the same can be applied to businesses. “Big companies that work come from small companies that work.”
Apple, Dell, McDonalds, Walmart, Microsoft, Google, and on and on all started somewhere. At some point in their existence, they were no different from my company or your company. Small, agile, and terrible underfunded :0)
