I’ve had three independent discussions with business owners/entrepreneurs this past week. All about one thing – focus.
As entrepreneurs and marketers, we’re struck with a particular bug… A bug that doesn’t affect the normal people. You see, most people wake up, go to work, come home, cook dinner, watch TV and go to bed… Only to wake up to do it all over again the next day.
People who start businesses have this insatiable appetite to fall in love with ‘shiny objects.’ I’ve done it. You’ve done it. The newest, coolest, most wizbangingest device or software package or ‘secret formula’… Usually, to no avail.
They buy thing after thing, work at it long enough to figure out it doesn’t work yet, and then move on to the next ‘thing.’
It an unfortunate cycle, to be sure.
The problem is, there is no focus. From the person who buys product and after product with no success… To the person who’s afraid to nail down his target market because it’ll negate a certain demographic… To the person who’s got 13 project started and nothing in the pipeline, going broke as he’s doing it.
All of that can be solved. And it’s a pretty easy fix. The solution: Focus.
Focus on one thing at a time, until it’s done. It’s awesome to have ideas. Ideas are money. But don’t let all of those ideas fighting in your head dictate your focus. If you do, you won’t ever get anything accomplished. 10 years from now, you’ll still have great ideas but you’ll still be broke because nothing was ever implemented.
Choose one path. Focus on it until it’s making you money. I promise it will. Use that cash to start your next project, with all the knowledge and experience that you learned in the previous venture.
It’s ok to have lots of projects and stuff going on, but make sure to focus on one at a time until it’s done!

Prioritizing things helps a lot in getting focused, for me at least. But when you have a slight case of short attention span disorder it can be really challenging!
