Podcast 22 – A Guide To Goal Management

Goal Management Series

In the next couple posts, I am going to be writing a Goal Management Series devoted to the procrastinator in all of us.

Setting goals is a little like taking your vitamins… Everyone should do it, but few people actually make it a priority. In fact, there are over 30 books released each year that talk about goals to one degree or another, but how many of us actually read them?

I am and always have been an advocate of good goal setting (and goal keeping). I think it’s a very important part of my daily existence and has led to a lot of my successes so far. The problem is, without a good process, goal management is often forgot about. And if you are going to buy software to address the problem, look to spend between $100 and $500 a copy.

In all actuality, a binder and a pen work even better.

What is a Goal? And Goal Management?

One of the best definitions of the word goal I have heard is:

“A goal is nothing more than a dream with a deadline.” Keith Ferrazi

Now, when I mention the word deadline, I can already see your eyes start to water. Deadlines are hated events for most people, in any work culture.

Personally, I don’t mind them. They force you to get very real about what it is going to take to accomplish some set objective. For instance, in taking on a big web based project, you have a goal. That goal might be to fabricate some sort of online based training website in two months.

Well, in order to meet that end requirement you have to break the project down into smaller pieces so you can plan accordingly. One day you might implement the front end sales pages. The next, you can get the credit card processing to work. The day after, you can start hacking away at the admin panel which will integrate Moodle. It isn’t such a daunting task when broken down into parts.

Goals aren’t much different. In order to hit some desired target, you need to take steps to get there.

That’s where goal management comes in. Goal management is nothing more than a process in which you address those goals. I personally like using some brainstorming charts that I will make available for download, combined with an excel spreadsheet that lets me move a lot of the information around. From these goal management sheets, I then develop task lists!

We will go over all of this stuff in a lot greater detail in the coming articles, but I just wanted to write a brief introduction to the series overall.

My personal take on Goal Management

At this time, one of my goals is to make $2,000.00 a month on my network of sites. How am I going to get there? Establishing informational products and paid content? Yep. Establishing a member’s only higher-level educational site that relates to Empower Ideas? Right again.

In order for these things to be actionable, I had to fix them up with their start and finish dates. It is the only way for me to prioritize for them.

So, starting tomorrow, we are going to get into goal management – more notably brainstorming for goals. I have downloadable documents that I use personally almost every day as an added bonus for you.

Oftentimes, it isn’t so much where you are going, but how you are going to get there…

Here are the tools we will be discussing in greater details. If you want, you can download them now, or you can get them individually through the series of posts:

Podcast – Business Automation

Friday, October 12th, 2007

Its been awhile since my last podcast… In fact, trolling through my admin panel here, I saw over 21,000 people have listened to me ramble on! To me, that’s pretty damn amazing.

So here I go again! A podcast about automating your business!

For those that are unfamiliar to business automation; automation is when you build your business to a point where you are no longer a crucial piece of the puzzle. And for those that don’t want to manage the day to day affairs of their operation, automation is the key.

Basically, what business automation does is outsource your tasks to people or groups that are trained to handle them more effectively. Not saying you aren’t doing a bang up job, but time is crucial – and the one resource that we can’t get back. When you thought about starting your own business, were you thinking or creating a job for yourself? Or were you looking for freedom?

The reason I bring this up now is it is a process I have been trying to come to grips with recently. I simply have to much work to do myself, and I am the bottleneck preventing my company from growth. Hopefully, if I start taking myself out of the picture and lining up a process that supports it all, I will be able to manage it more effectively!

Entrepreneurial Podcast – Business Automation Shownotes:

  • The problems with starting your own buisness:
    • its a job
    • you don’t get a paycheck
    • you need to keep the pipeline full
    • you need to keep clients happy
    • most importantly, there are only so many hours in a day!
  • Benefits of Entrepreneurialism:
    • no set schedule
    • you aren’t told what to wear or how to act
    • you work at your own pace
    • you will generally make more money
  • Business Automation
    • what can you outsource?
    • could you implement a system that lessens your work?
    • can you pull multiple income streams?
    • how are you going to keep the pipeline full?
    • what do you do when client’s jobs end?
      • products?
      • processes?
      • how can you still make money?

Hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!

Podcast #20 – Generating Traffic To A Startup

Friday, June 15th, 2007

One issue which everyone has when starting a company is getting the word out. That much is true for traditional bricks and mortar stores and websites. It doesn’t matter how spectacular your service or product is… If no one knows you exist then you won’t be making any money.

This podcast deals with those issues. It is by no means all inclusive, but I do give my opinion about some of the best ways to get the word out about your business, traditional or web oriented.

Shownotes:

  1. Generating Traffic through marketing
  2. Bricks and Mortar establishements need to pursue traditional channels
    1. magazines
    2. newspapers
    3. mailings
    4. sales people
    5. location
  3. Websites and online businesses
    1. Pay per click campaigns
    2. Search engine optimization
    3. paid reviews
    4. online public relations releases
  4. Marketing makes you money

Enjoy!

Podcast #19 – Experience vs. Opinion

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Tuesday, I went down to Villanova University for the Global Student of the Entrepreneur Awards. I didn’t win anything but it was a worthwhile experience in general, aside from driving 16 or so hours in one day, on about two hours of sleep!

I wanted to take a minute and recap a few thoughts I had from there, so I put them together in a podcast. Basically, there were four quotes that I wanted to share, because they offer a valuable insight into a starting business and growing.

  • “Speak in terms of experience, not in terms of opinion.”
  • “Build a system that makes you replaceable.”
  • “Create a business, not a job.”
  • “Have a mentor.”

My favorite is the first, because it has implications to so many areas. Granted, we like opinionated people. Their blogs are more well read, their shows on TV receive more attention, but when starting a business it is the opposite. You need to learn from other’s experiences rather than what they think will happen.

Anyway, check out the podcast below. I added an intro with music, but I am not quite sure how much I like it. I will keep playing around with it in the meantime.
