Use Your Microblog To Your Advantage

Monday, April 28th, 2008

photo_2488_20070301 Microblogging is on the rise at a rapid rate right now. If you don’t believe me go to Alexa.com and look up the stats for Twitter.com. I think you would be hard pressed to argue after what you will see. Based on this I think it is a good idea to provide readers with real information that they can use to their advantage. If I’m just giving you trivia info, we are both wasting our time.

So here are 5 great microblog practices that every microblogger should be using. These apply to any and all that microblog, whether you are simply giving play by play announcements of your day (you would be amazed at the number of followers Twitter accounts like this have) or you are using it like some airline companies and updating customers with real-time information.

5 Top Microblog Practices

1. Add your Pownce feed to your Tumblr account so you only have to post once. Pownce outputs an RSS feed and Tumblr allows for direct RSS submission. And use Twitterfeed.com to add it to your Twitter account. Twitterfeed.com allows you to auto post to Twitter from an RSS feed.

2. Use Tools to find friends and followers. There are two other applications that I really like that will help you expand your network: Twubble – which looks at your friend’s friends and recommends other people you could follow. Twits Like Me – which looks at your updates and finds other people talking about the same thing. Find others like you and follow them. You can find both of these tools at www.WebWorkerDaily.com.

3. TwitThis: Let others use their Twitter accounts to spread the word about you. With this handy little tool they can share what they find on your site with an automatically created short url and their own description right from your blog posts. Find it at: http://twitthis.com/

4. Stay on Top of Your Twitter: I recommend using Twhirl, found at www.twhirl.com. Twhirl creates widget like plugin for your desktop. You can update and configure various items, and monitor multiple accounts at the same time from Twitter without your browser. You can also update your Pownce account directly from Twhirl simultaneously.

5. And Last but Not Least: Remember to reciprocate the follow. Try to follow others that are following you. It simply builds good repoire.

If you aren’t microblogging yet, you should be. It’s fun, easy, quick, painless, and best of all it is a great way to socialize with customers in ways never before possible. And customers across the world are eating it up!

Social Marketing: Don’t be a Recluse

social The idea of marketing online has been around for a fairly long time now. Even the idea of social marketing has been around for a while. Many of you already know that. But I wanted to put together some locations, blogs, platforms, and services that will be beneficial to any and all who are marketing online.

Social Networking to Keep You Active

The idea of marketing with social networks is nothing new. People have been marketing with MySpace for years (long enough that MySpace marketing is almost a dead venue). But there are some new contenders in social networking and some old contenders with some new flair.

FaceBook – Now I know this isn’t new, but what is new is the Blog It app that FaceBook recently announced. It is an app that allows blogging to multiple platforms from FaceBook.

Ning – Ning is awesome. It is a “hosted for you” social network builder. With Ning you can build your own niche related social network.

MicroBlogging

MicroBlogging is one of those areas that marketers are still iffy on. While it is a great marketing venue, it comes down to a question of ethics and spamming vs. not spamming. There are some great ways to use microblogs simply to keep your customers, users, readers up to date. You can use them to announce product promotions, exclusive offers, time-sensitive offers, or niche related, up-to-the-minute news.

Twitter – Twitter is the most widely used microblog out there right now. It is complete with photo and video plugins, desktop apps to monitor and post with, SMS capabilities, RSS output and more.

Tumblr – Tumblr is very similar to Twitter but has some CSS customization capabilities that are nice. They also offer longer posting, built in video and photo capabilities, and RSS input. You can link your Twitter to your Tumblr to get double exposure without double work.

Social News Sites

Social news sites are sites like Digg. Now Digg is a great way to get social and start to build a following, but it is open to any news from across the net. But you can create your own niche related social news site similar to Digg.

Pligg – Pligg is an open source CMS that is up and coming. While they have been around for a while, they have been in the news more and more, especially as a viable marketing venue. Pligg is pretty much just like any other CMS to install (I have not seen it on Fantastico yet though) and there is a ton of information on their site.

These are just some of the newer things available in the social networking area. Stay tuned for more social marketing tips, tricks, and resources. Until then check out these other resources:

How To Expand Your Twitter Network For Increased Sales

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Wearing my Twitter shirt - Twitter MarketingI have to admit, when I first saw Twitter - I thought it was pointless. To me, it was too much like lifecasting to be anything worthwhile. After all, who wants to hear my every thought or “What I am doing” throughout the day?

At first, I set up a profile to see what the service was all about, as I do with most new web apps. But then I started getting these email alerts about people following me. So I logged in to see what I was missing! Here, this entire little ecosystem of mini-blog posts erupted in my Twitter page! So, immediately the wheels started turning. What can this do for my business? Or my client’s business? Is it worth the time?

Twitter as a Social Media Marketing Tool

Ever since Ritu and I partnered up to form Axiium and launch Ghostblogging, I have been amazed at what social marketing can do. The first day Ghostblogging was live, we recorded almost 2200 unique visitors. I remember logging into Feedburner Pro launch night and having to pick my mouth up off the floor because of the traffic Twitter, Reddit, Stumbleupon and Digg sent us.

The simple fact is – social marketing works. If done right, it can bring traffic that a startup couldn’t hope to pay for through Adwords, SEO, or any other medium. And at the heart of it all is networking.

Networking both online and offline is key

In traditional business, it’s all about who you know. It matters who you talk to on the phone, who you keep email updates of, and who you go to lunch with. Here’s a little secret – the online world is the same way. If you want to harness the power of social media networks, you have to be well networked yourself. You have to put in the time digging and stumbling and reddit’ing (?) in order to have any influence whatsoever.

Finding friends via Twitter

One of the hardest and most difficult things to do is find friends in Twitter (or ‘follow people’ in Twitterese). You can view the public timeline or enter their email address. And even though I have probably 700 or 800 email addresses, there are a lot of business contacts that just wouldn’t understand the web app.

WebWorkerDaily posted two applications that I really like that will help you expand your network:

  • Twubble – which looks at your friend’s friends and recommends other people you could follow.
  • Twits Like Me – which looks at your tweets and finds other people talking about the same thing.

Both of these applications allow you to follow new people very quickly. The nice thing is, once you follow someone, they tend to follow you!

Increasing your Social Networking Mana

By using Twitter, hitting up Twubble, and following 50 or 100 people (who reciprocate the follow) – you are increasing your own reach. You now have a direct, one on one connection with that many more people! So the next product you launch or blog post you publish, it will be pushed in front of all those newly acquired friends (who themselves have social networks and can promote it further).

Needless to say, the more people you can connect with, the better your marketing efforts. But I can guarantee that by taking a long look at social marketing and using Twitter as a medium, you will be increasing sales before the day is out.
